“Good luck out there. Should you need to vomit, please do so away from the piano,” quipped the competition organizer. Out of all the days I could have woken up feverish and dizzy, it just had to be March 27, 2011, the day of the piano competition. Playing the piano for an unwelcoming panel of stone-faced adjudicators when everything I saw seemed to spin round-and-round was the last thing I wanted to do.…
Destiny essay In the United States we live our lives based around the idea of freedom and free will. The idea that we can do whatever we want, whenever we want. But how much of our lively hood is really in our control? In the poem “Fire on the Hills” written by Robinson Jeffers, he describes a forest raging with fire, burning everything in its path.…
This leads to another important key point, how the German pianist produces many of the greatest songs in classical music history, despite his hearing loss problem? The simplistic explanation about the memory sequences, perception, creativity, and connection to musical instruments, is the human brain. Nowadays, the controversial…
In the video “The Transformative Power of Classical Music” Benjamin Zanders demonstrates how powerful and connecting classical music can be. While not everyone is a fan of the classical genre, Benjamin Zanders attempts to prove that everyone can enjoy it and connect to it. He tries to prove this by asking his audience to think of someone they loved that was no longer with them as he played a piece by Chopin. By doing this, Benjamin Zanders was seeking to pull the audience in and let them feel what his message truly meant. While he cannot prove that every single person is affected by that piece, he did give an example of a kid who had been emotionally affected by Benjamin Zanders’ playing of Chopin.…
I was striving for an unattainable goal because I didn’t work towards any form of progression. On the other hand, being an instrumentalist has taught me the importance of daily goals, a good work ethic, and dedication. With that in mind, I am becoming more aware that music is not just the notes on an staff but also the zipping of a jacket and even the tumbling on a trampoline floor. I believe that my five year old self would be proud of who I am becoming because I have already completed my personal goals instead of lacking improvement in the shadows of someone…
Some people believe that we can succeed with our own control, while others believe that succeeding is due to their natural ability. Two authors David Epstein and Malcolm Gladwell both have different perspectives of the two sides. The Sports Gene, by David Epstein, states that innate talent has an advantage over practice. The Outliers: The Story of Success, by Malcolm Gladwell concludes that preparation is more important than innate talent. Gladwell's argument, that people's motivation and practice lead them to achieve is stronger than Epstein's claim that innate talent leads to success.…
At 6:00 p.m, on Thursday, March 23, 2017, I attended the graduate recital of violinist Hannah Howland, A graduate student at the University of Northern Iowa. The recital took place in Graham Hall at, an intimately sized performance space housed in Russel Hall. Hannah Howland is a graduate student perusing a Master’s degree in Violin Performance. Hannah performed the first two pieces of her recital solo, and was then accompanied by Polina Khatsko, an instructor of Piano at the University of Northern Iowa, on her third and final piece. The pieces performed were all four movements of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Sonata No. 3 in C major, BWV 1005; the first movement, “Ballade”, of Eugene Ysayë’s Sonata No. 3 Opus 27; and all four movements of Gabrielle…
The day I started to play my instruments changed my life, each in a different way. In 2002 I was overjoyed to find out that my mother had enrolled me in piano lessons with a family friend. I remember sitting down in our living room at the brown Baldwin piano pushed against our fire place. The keyboard itself seemed to stretch on forever with its gigantic keys.…
For my concert critique, I went to Jason Terry’s Doctoral Piano Recital on Tuesday, December 1st at the School of Music in room 206. Because Terry was able to pick the pieces he played, he picked a range of different pieces to emphasize his wide range of talent. He included older and modern pieces including Bach, Godowsky, Balakirev, Zorn, and Liszt. The first piece he played was “Prelude & Fugue, BWV 872” composed by Bach. I was a little unsure about the nature and form of this piece because it was unlike some of the more structured pieces we listen to in class.…
I received multiple letters of recognition from the Dean of Academic Affairs along my years in Community College until May 12, 2015 for my GPA of 4.0. In this letter my academic success was acknowledged and congratulated as an essential part of Miami Dade College alumni. It congratulates on my hard work in the semester and encourages me to continue with my efforts. Is a recognition to the progress I have made, it does not came with money or an special award but is enough to put it in…
The introduction to Theology IV Honors has been quite intriguing already. Even though we have only been in school for about three weeks, this class has challenged me to think of my world and my existence as a bigger pictures instead of narrowing my focus on stuff in my life that might seem important now, but in reality is only trivial. The next sentence that you will read might seem strange but it means more to me than one might think: the placement of Theology, in my schedule, is perfect. As I began the school year, I realized that my schedule had three subjects that, in the past, have been quite difficult to me. Not only is the material covered in these classes difficult for me, but the workload given by my teachers has already caused my…
My first year of high school was winding down, teachers had covered all learning material, and most students were preparing for finals. June had just begun, and along with studying, I had an upcoming saxophone recital for which I had been preparing since April. The Tuesday before my recital, I had my second to last lesson with my teacher, Fred Scerbo, before the recital on Sunday. I was preparing a piece by Charlie Parker named "Anthropology". Despite its difficulty, I felt that I would be able to perform it well.…
I learned the need to work well in advance of the deadline. Musical details may be different than academic details, but just as slight differences in tone and pitch can completely change the music’s meaning, every detail, regardless of how small, matters in all subjects. Whether it’s a math problem or a novel, my heightened attention to detail helps me to better identify the correct steps or the overall theme. As high-school progressed it became more and more evident that relying on natural abilities doesn’t equate to achieving…
¨It’s the (eye) of the tiger, it’s the thrill of the fight, risin up to the challenge of our rival." "Eye of the Tiger" by Survivor is my theme song. I think this song represents some of the struggles that I have had to go through: in school, at home, and in my social life in the last couple of months. It reminds me that I need to keep going if I want to succeed and make something of myself in the future. “Eye of the Tiger” was written and performed by the American rock band Survivor.…
Throughout this semester of English 101, writing has become more of a skill than a struggle. Writing was a challenge that I dreaded when I chose to be in the course, nonetheless with time, I learned from my mistakes and was able to improve. This course made me very doubtful on whether I could be capable of even writing a paper that would provide me with a decent grade, but at the same time made me push myself in my writing technique. In the end, I can reflect that I learned from my mistakes and wrote papers that took time and dedication to accomplish. I learned from this class to be confident in my writing and make all the mistakes to receive the grade I want in the end.…
