As a photographer, I have created a visual escape for others though many years of exploring the creativity of the photographic eye. Before my attendance with this school I had only searched for a ways to provide certainty through community service; this physically provided less fortunate with that value of certainty. I have always thought photography to be powerful means of providing certainty that we all crave in our lives today. But in 1967 when the New Documents Exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art featured the work Arbus, along with that of Garry Winogrand and Lee Friedlander, as an alternative to traditional documentary photography it was shocking. Although her intimate portraits of those outside the mainstream made some people uncomfortable, some of her photos in the New Documents exhibit became some of her most defining in her short career and forever changed photography.…

I used to be a traditional artist, working in paint, sculpture, drawing. Then I realized my work wasn't seen in the way I had envisioned for it, so I then made the transition into photography. Because I felt I could create work that would allow the viewer the ability to envision themselves in the piece. Almost as if they were a part of the narrative. Sontag rigorously evaluates the meaning of photography and how it is put to purpose in modern society in a series of essays. Chapter six: ‘The image world’, is of particular interest to me as Sontag critiques the use of continual images in modern media to entice consumers to buy products, thus fuelling a culture of consumerism that props up the capitalist economic system of the West. Written in 1977, before the advent of digital technology and the internet, which led us into such a culture of image hyperbole, the message Sontag sends seems portentous. Susan Sontag was an author and critic who attended Harvard and Oxford universities at graduate level to study the Arts. Her intended audiences for this book, published by Farrar, Straus and…

It documents our people, events, and feelings by capturing that moment in time forever for anyone else who may come across the photo. ”Looking back, documentary photography has made waves of impact as a method of truth-telling in difficult times, a way of exposing disturbing scenes to raise awareness of things like poverty and famine, to ultimately reshape the public’s opinion on government policies that were often the direct cause”(Markert 3).Photography has made a bigger impact on human life than many people may believe, the reason being that the change that it has made is over…

The paradoxical role of photography in contemporary life is explored by Teju Cole in his essay “Memories of Things Unseen.” When a photograph is the last trace we have of a destroyed work of art, it becomes something more, or so it seems. Photography in its purest form is simply a method of storytelling without the need for words. Many factors go into taking a photo. You don't simply take a photo using just your eyes, but rather with your emotions, experience, and heart.…
