General Causes Cerebral palsy occurs from brain injuries or serious brain malformation which occur during early development. Every case of this disorder is unique. Cerebral palsy is different from traumatic brain injuries or TBI’s because they occur before the brain has fully developed. Cerebral palsy is not a hereditary condition. Weather Cerebral palsy is congenital or not depends on the timing of the brain injury. According to the Center for Disease Control, “The majority of CP (85%–90%) is congenital. In many cases, the specific cause is not known.” Like stated before infants born prematurely, breeched, or fetal growth restrictions are common risk factors for Cerebral Palsy. Certain infections can increase the likelihood of the disorder. “Some types of infection that have been linked with CP include viruses such as chickenpox, rubella (German measles), and cytomegalovirus (CMV), and bacterial infections such as infections of the placenta or fetal membranes, or maternal pelvic infections [Center for Disease Control].” Low birthweight, and multiple births increase the risk of developing Cerebral Palsy. “The prevalence of Cerebral palsy was 6.2 per 1000 livebirths among children born weighing 1,500 to 2,499 grams (3 1/3 to 5 ½ pounds) and 59.5 per 1000 for children born weighing 2,500 grams of more (Center for Disease Control.” It is also worth noting that women that experience seizures, are intellectually disabled, of have a thyroid condition are put at a higher risk of having an infant born with Cerebral Palsy.
