Cerebral Palsy affects body movement, muscle control, posture, and balance amongst other things.
Cerebral Palsy affects each child differently. Some children may become completely paralyzed whilst others may only be partially paralyzed. This is dependent on when the brain injury had taken place and what type of injury had taken place.
There are four main types of Cerebral Palsy:
1. Spasic Cerebral Palsy –Children with this type of Cerebral Palsy have muscles that are very tight and weak. As a result they are unable to control their movement and it makes walking very difficult.
2. Athetoid Cerebral Palsy – This type of Cerebral Palsy is also referred to as Dyskinetic Cerebral Palsy. Children with this type of Cerebral Palsy experience both high muscle tone (stiff muscles ) and low muscle tone (Floppy muscles) and as a result of the fluctuation of the muscle tone they have difficulty in movement with their hands and legs which makes it difficult for them to walk and hold objects.

Ataxic Cerebral Palsy –Children with this type of Cerebral Palsy shake when walking and when holding and picking up objects. They also have difficulty in balancing and difficulty with their speech
4. Mixed Cerebral Palsy- This type of Cerebral Palsy is a mixture of Spasic Cerebral Palsy, Athetoid Cerebral Palsy and Ataxic Cerebral Palsy.
Cerebral Palsy is not life threatening. Some children can live right up to adulthood. Cerebral Palsy is not curable however it can be managed with the correct treatment. This condition does not get worst over time, it remains the same.
