The movie Centurion follows the path of Roman officer Quintus Dias in the year of 117 A.D. The movie begins with Dias escaping from the Picts, a tribe which is preventing Rome from conquering northern Britain. Dias joins the Ninth Legion to fight against the Picts. The legion has a scout, Etain, to guide them to the Picts. However, Etain is not on the Roman side and leads the legion into a trap. Most of the soldiers die, but a few survive. The Picts take Roman General Virilus as a prisoner of war. Quintus takes it upon himself to lead the survivors to rescue the general.

According to BBC News, historians are still unsure how the Picts were able to defeat the Ninth Legion. Perhaps a well-planned ambush led to the disappearance of 5,000 highly trained Roman soldiers. Nonetheless, the Picts were able to defeat the Romans with the strategic use of guerilla warfare.
Another important historical point made in Centurion was the culture of the Pict tribe. Although there are no written records from the tribe, there are Roman stone carvings that give historians information about the tribe. In the Revolutionary War, Americans used guerilla warfare to fight Great Britain. The British soldiers were highly-trained, just like the Roman soldiers. Roman and British soldiers were also fighting on enemy grounds, which turned out to be a disadvantage for both armies. The American soldiers were fighting for their independence, similar to the reason the Picts were fighting. In both scenarios, the underdog outsmarted the uniformed armies, and the Americans were victorious.
