power and authority are not nice word to writing centers but hey don 't have to be bad ones. these words are muted by calling students who work there 'peers ' in any way shape or form. train tutors in nondirective questioning methods. the gaols is to preserve the peer relationship, encourage collaborative learning rather then hierarchical teaching. be an expert in not appearing as an expert. there is a difficulty in remaining a peer. there can be a loss in confidence in your authority from the student that causes them to become less interested. centers have long been uncomfortable with power and authority. ambiguity makes them hard to define. no one likes to feel less empowered, students coming for help need to feel as comfortable as possible. …show more content…
nondirective tutoring clicks. guide them along discovering things for themselves.both turtor and student shared authority, collaborative operation to improve text. certainly there is much faith in the student and tutor to learn from one another. this is tough love, youre to seem as two friends one tutoring the other, but the tutor is expected to criticize and they student to have tough skin. nondirective questioning can have fault, if the student doesn 't have the knowledge and the tutor doesn 't take the authority to teach them. ask questions, listen, guide, and answer their questions. take just the amount of authority needed. be careful to be aware of defensiveness and keep contentiousness out of our interaction. both must share authority. writing centers should not be ashamed that there sessions will vary greatly. if you are unsure of something ask another …show more content…
tutors are effective because they are peers trained to be nondirective. their authority comes from not having any. the don 't do the students work for them rather guide and lead them through questioning to find the answers on their own. tutors should be trained to maintain a comfortable environment, filled with kindness, understanding, and respect. writing center should maintain the atmosphere of a safe house, but make sure the line is clear. you are here to work. tutors should be taught to recognise where the authority lies and what and when to do something or not do something. when that is achieved the can then use teaching techniques, nondirective or directive based on the session. when lacking experience they should feel comfortable moving the session in a direction that makes them feel in control. tutors should not be made to feel inadequate. the watchword in tutor training should be flexibility. when the student holds more knowledge then the tutor should take more nondirective methods, if the student has less knowledge the tutor should be more directive. we have here not plagiarism but teaching and learning. the affective domain is the various personality traits of tutors and students. there is an inherit fisk with every session given the need for guidance and authority. the authority of the student is effected by varies things and should be taken step by step. problems come when tutors are trained
