tutors are effective because they are peers trained to be nondirective. their authority comes from not having any. the don 't do the students work for them rather guide and lead them through questioning to find the answers on their own. tutors should be trained to maintain a comfortable environment, filled with kindness, understanding, and respect. writing center should maintain the atmosphere of a safe house, but make sure the line is clear. you are here to work. tutors should be taught to recognise where the authority lies and what and when to do something or not do something. when that is achieved the can then use teaching techniques, nondirective or directive based on the session. when lacking experience they should feel comfortable moving the session in a direction that makes them feel in control. tutors should not be made to feel inadequate. the watchword in tutor training should be flexibility. when the student holds more knowledge then the tutor should take more nondirective methods, if the student has less knowledge the tutor should be more directive. we have here not plagiarism but teaching and learning. the affective domain is the various personality traits of tutors and students. there is an inherit fisk with every session given the need for guidance and authority. the authority of the student is effected by varies things and should be taken step by step. problems come when tutors are trained
