Tiddies, racks, juggs, knockers, bee stings, chi chis, melons, milk ducts and boobs; These are all synonyms for the pouch that contains tissue and glands that lay upon a woman 's chest, the breast. What exactly is the function of the breast? The breast is special tissue found in the pectoral region of the body. It contains lobes that, when the body produces enough of the hormone prolactin, produces milk made to feed offspring(The Breast..,2014). Though the breast is used to create breast milk if needed, it is not considered a sexual organ, for it is not needed during reproduction. Then why is there censorship of the breast? Specifically only female breast? Free the Nipple is a campaign that promotes gender equality through eradicating the censorship …show more content…
Men can lactate just as women(Swaminathan, 2007). If men stimulate their nipples enough, the body will began to produce more prolactin causing lactation. The same process happens with females, if the nipple experiences stimulation or a change in hormones due to an event such as pregnancy, the breast began to lactate. Another similarity both men and women carry is the potential to develop breast cancer. Breast cancer is not limited to females, as the phrase “Save the tatas” would have you believe, men can develop cancer as well. If both males and females have breast that can accomplish the same abilities, why is only one of them censored? Why not both? Or an even better idea, why not neither? These are not sexual organs, there is no reason they should be censorship, especially one that promotes gender inequality. If a child were to grow up in a society where women’s breast are freely exposed, they would understand that it was just how humans are made, not that breast are considered genitalia. In countries such as Africa that still has tribes, the children in the tribes understand that the breast were created to feed offspring but not to bring pleasure to a man. If children in 3rd world country can understand this concept, why can’t …show more content…
New York, Ohio, Texas, Hawaii, New Hampshire and Maine are the select few states that are promoting the equality, allowing both genders to free the nipple(Cappadona, 2015). While not all states participate in freeing the nipple, there are a few more that allows women to breastfeed in public without it being considered public lewdness. This is a step forward in freeing the nipple as it is often frowned upon, though it is a natural and safe process. Another step forward are the states that allow breast to be out but areolas must be covered. Arizona, Florida and South Carolina are a few states to name but there are 31 states that allow breast out. Free the Nipple has also gained support in foreign countries. A member of Iceland’s Parliament named Björt Ólafsdóttir posted a picture of her bare breast after watching the documentary Free the Nipple in hope to promote the laws carrying over to Iceland, stating “This is to feed children, Shove it up your patriarchy” (Christian J, 2015) Ólafsdóttir’s support is great to have and will hopefully help with international countries realizing the breast is not a sexual organ as well. Free the nipple is an beautiful campaign that will soon help bring us a step closer to end gender inequality in the long run, each step is valuable and I will be here to support it to the

The act of breastfeeding is one reserved between a child and its mother. Many times breastfeeding is seen as sexual and society can frown upon this simple act. When reading Annette Kuhn’s, The Power of the Image, you find yourself reading a powerful message about women and how important the study of women really is. One question Kuhn asks in her article that stuck out to me is, “Why are images of women’s bodies so prevalent in our society?” (Kuhn 42) After reading this question, I begin to wonder if this prevalence is a good or bad thing and what could be the different types of media or gender to blame for this question of predominance. What I believe to be true is that a woman’s body is worshipped by men, and a reason for it is early paintings and poetry showcasing the female figure in the nude.…

In other words, we think that breasts should only exist as sexualized objects for male pleasure, which is why there is so much debate about women who breastfeed in public. The fact of the matter is, yes breasts are sexual objects, which is why they are able to be aroused during sexual encounters. Nonetheless, women’s breasts should not be synonymous with sex. If society is fine when breasts are exposed to make sells and for entertainment, then it should be fine when a woman is breastfeeding her child in public because breast are more than a representation of a woman’s sexuality. An opposite point that Lisa Wade makes in her article, “What Makes a Body Obscene?” is that, “It’s not simply that breasts are considered pornographic.…

In other countries and communities around the world censorship of the human body and language this would seem out of the norm. In Germany, television displays almost no censorship and nationally broadcasts frontal and back nudity without hesitation. Breastfeeding in public is one of society’s biggest controversial issues. Breastfeeding is convenient because you (as the mother) already have the natural materials to feed. The baby will decide when it’s time to eat, so feeding in public isn’t really a choice the mother has but it’s a choice the baby makes. Breastfeeding is healthier because sometimes babies will have an allergic reaction to the cow’s protein in the formula, causing discomforting symptoms. Breastfeeding in public isn’t a choice it’s a responsibility that a mother has, and she shouldn’t be put down because of it.…
