Censorship Of Books In The 20th Century

Books impacted the 20th century by introducing new genres into society. Books like, The Wizard of Oz, The Adventures of Alice in Wonderland, and Winnie-the-Pooh, where known as the golden age of children books. The Virginian and Riders of the Purple Sage made westerns a new unique American genres. Also, genres like science fiction, horror, mystery, and romance started spring up in the dime novels, these were stories that cost a dime to buy. Pulp stories were coming about too, they were sordid tales of murder, prostitution, and gangster’s violence: others told more of fantastical stories about aliens and monsters. How books played a role in the war and politics was many authors started writing books about the wars, they wanted to debunk the American myths, which played into the political side of the wars, and the government in general, this happen after World War 2. Basically, censorship is the suppression of words, images, or ideas, which are offensives. When people read something that offends them or they don’t agree with, they want to take away from everyone, so no one can read it. This is when you either banned or challenged a book. With that being said, there are so many books that have either been banned or challenged. For example, the book The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, this book was banned by the Baptist College in South Carolina because of the language and the mere reference to sex. Also, another book that got banned was Upton Sinclair, The Jungle. It was banned for the dangerous socialist views expressed in the book, and also you get to see how the food industry actually works and what goes into our food. Many people didn’t like that so they wanted it gone and out of sight. (I got this information for the Banned Book Week website, on banned books that shaped America). This is how books has shaped the past few
