Throughout the history of the NFL, the deliberate hitting and beating to the head has caused countless of concussions and brain trauma. However, the NFL hasn't always been truthful when discussing and reporting these injuries to the public. From a study completed by the NY Times, “[The] NFL omitted more than 100 diagnosed concussions from its study on the issue nearly 20 years ago, thus deflating the concussion rate and making the sport appear safer than it actually was.” This shows how the NFL organization censored the public from the real truth behind concussions and NFL players. This act of hiding information did not cause a greater good but caused harm to the players. Consequently, nothing was done because the public and even the players were not well informed of the facts. Our group understood the reason for the NFL to censor the information, although, we thought it was irresponsible and a bad decision to let this continue unnoticed. Overall, we feel it was a careless decision to withhold this information from the public and the players safety should be put above obtaining better ratings and …show more content…

This is proof that the NFL was trying to reduce violence and injuries, but this still not does not seem to work for reducing them. People let their kids go out and play the sport while they are potentially risking serious head injury, like concussions, which is very concerning to the child's parents, because of all the news and facts they know about concussions. If the NFL, or the equipment makers for the football players, came together to work for good equipment that caused less injuries, then this would save money and damage for the football player. These injuries leave people wondering “Will concussions ever be prevented or reduced in percentage throughout the years of football”? Or “What are sports medical teams doing to prevent concussions or make helmets more concussion-proof”?…

Over 5,000 former players sued the NFL (Belson 1), alleging that it had hidden the dangers of concussions from them. The NFL disputed evidence that its players had a high rate of severe brain damage for years. Professional sports participants sustain brain injuries at a much far higher rate than general population. The NFL and representatives of retired players came up with a financial calculation about 2 years ago to establish a pool of $675 million dollars to cover injuries and diseases that are linked to head trauma that the players sustained during their careers (Belson 1). Unfortunately this amount was rejected by the United States district court judge who was presiding over the NFL settlement between the NFL and the 5,000 former players that who sued the NFL (Belson 1).…

Some people believe that especially in the NFL, more extreme measures need to be taken to prevent head injuries. Some believe that the players should have to sign wavers saying that the NFL will not be responsible for any injury that may happen to them during the course of the game. The NFL has already tried this. The NFL is now trying to reduce the number of concussions by calling penalties in the case of helmet-to-helmet hits, resulting in a fifteen-yard penalty. This still isn’t enough.…
