The quote “Censorship reflects a society's lack of confidence in itself,” was said by Potter Stewart, who was an associate justice for the United States Supreme Court. This statement is very true, most societies that have prevalent censorship, have very controlling and strict government. All censorship in Syria can be directly traced back to the Syrian leader, President Bashar al-Assad, who took command of Syria in 2000. Different roles that the Syrian government plays in censorship is by getting rid of any independent news coverage and barring foreign reporters, detaining and attacking journalists, and disabling mobile phones, landlines, electricity, & the internet. Many reporters that try to do news coverage in Syria usually end up missing, being tortured, or killed.

Their main way of censoring the media is through television, not many people in Syria have access to television, so those that do are manipulate because the main broadcasting network is Syrian Television, owned by the government. They overrule all the companies that are legally allowed to publish media. One of the only privately owned media companies is Syrian Arab Republic Radio, although it is privately owned, it is not allowed to report any news or have any political content. They have had a multitude of “Internet Blackouts,” over the past four years, there is no true source, but most are absolutely positive that the are caused by the Syrian government.
