Douglas Howard presents a personal experience of literary censorship in the article "Silencing Huck Finn.", defining the decision of when choosing censorship has a greater benefit over becoming offensive. In his article Howard discusses the benefits of establishing an open dialogue around contentious literature through a college English class. Additionally, analyzing the experience of choosing whether to recite aloud a profanity included in Mark Twain’s classic story “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn”, contemplating if staying true to a literary classic is worth perhaps offending or insulting any students. Setting Limits and Guidelines Should “offensive” forms of speech be censored or protected, when on a university campus? According to Derek Bok’s essay, “Protecting Freedom of Expression on the Campus,” the answer would be the latter. Bok argues that once a small form of censorship is introduced, it would only be a matter of time until more severe limitations are enforced (Bok 70). Although his reasoning can be deemed logical by many, once examined there are three undeniable faults that arise. First, he appears to have overlooked the intelligence and maturity level of a university student.…

Trigger warnings on college campuses, as a means to warn students of course material that may be offensive or disturbing to them, should not be allowed because it does not allow professional, intellectual academic discourse to occur. College professors are staring to second think on what course material to teach, because many students become offended with what comes out of the professor’s mouth, this also applies to comedians that would perform, but now they can’t because of the immaturity of students. Macroaggressions are the leading cause for the existence of trigger warnings. Macroaggressions are words or actions done by someone with no intent of harming someone, yet people take it the wrong way and think of it as a kind of violence.…

For example, “For nearly as long as the written word has existed, it has been a target for censorship” (“Books”). Censorship and Schools Nowhere is the debate over censorship more heated than in schools and universities. Parents want to protect their kids, students want to be heard over others and schools want to avoid any disruptive problems. It’s a fine line that many people tread and are uncertain about what to do, but when you look deeper into the issue the answer becomes clearer. There shouldn’t be any censorship in schools because doing so undermines our rights to free speech, prevents productive conversation and disrupts higher learning; we need to encourage free speech before nobody is allowed to open their mouths anymore.…
