Censorship In Art

Is pornography of a woman’s body really nothing more than just a picture? Do women really think men will respect them, when they can’t even respect their own bodies? Censorship in America has put a hold on exposing our nation to the nudity that art may bring, as well as the violence and religious conflicts that may come from it. First off, censoring art protects the image of women in society by censoring sexual images and pornography. Second, art censorship protects children from being exposed to violence and influencing bad behavior amongst other kids. Violence is ignorant and unjust, therefore making children ignorant and unjust. Children learn from what they see. According to the Oxford Dictionary, the definition of violence is “behavior involving physical force intended to hurt, damage, or kill someone or something.” Is this really the word kids are looking up to? Art censorship protects kids from being exposed to violence and influencing bad behavior amongst small children. Violence in television, movies, video games, or even social media is showing kids that it is okay to intentionally hurt someone. Exposure to violence can lead to long lasting emotional, physical, and mental harm, regardless if it is direct or if a child is a witness. In today’s generation, kids are constantly being shown that not only is violence acceptable, but also that it is cool. Whether it is shooting people in a video game or harassing someone online, violence is both physically and emotionally harmful. Children between the ages of five and eighteen are most vulnerable to this type of violence because they are young and still learning. They are also the most active with television, video games, and the computer. The behavior they see from the violence portrayed in such media is unfortunately not left on the television or computer screen. Finally, art censorship protects religion by preventing religious attacks on political art. An individual's rights end when they impinge on the safety and rights of others. By enacting laws against incitement to racial hatred and similar hate speech, we have accepted that freedom of expression should have limits.
