Since the beginning of time, censorship has posed a massive threat to the world population, as it is commonly crafted and enforced by those who strive to maintain a sense of superiority in society, and are against individuals going against a structured belief shared amongst millions. The latter often brings religion to light, as members within the community view an extensive amount of things as distasteful or sinful, which often provokes a storm of controversy from both sides. In my opinion, the prohibition of books, news outlets, films, or any form of media that sheds a beam of light on current issues that are deemed obscene by the oppressor, is doing more harm than good when taking today’s youth into consideration. For instance, homosexuality is still being deemed as a taboo subject, and there have been numerous incidents in which parents have protested against schools advocating for those within the LGBT community, or bringing up the matter in an innocent light. For example, a same-sex kiss within a school played caused an uproar in a North Vancouver community when Handsworth Secondary School debuted a kiss between two females, with many people deeming that it had been sexually explicit. Albeit, not one person complained about a kiss shared between a male character and the girl of his dreams, — a heterosexual pairing. Not one distateful comment was made about the alleged explicitness between the couple that is viewed as normal in society. It wasn’t until a chairwoman, undoubtedly to make it appear as though the blatant homophobia is nonexistent, spoke up and made claims that it hadn’t been the case whatsoever, that it was a sheer cry of distate for how things, “... neither lesbian or homosexual,” shouldn’t be so sexually visual. Subjects like this should not be censored, nor should we be teaching children that, people of the same sex sharing love for one another, is something overly sensual, whereas a love shared between men and women is completely
