Montag is a symbol of a “singed salamander.” This is a salamander that has been burned by the fire that illuminates the future and the contemporary man (Watt np). Montag has been burned by this society and what it has done to the world around him. He is a fireman, but he doesn't see how much this hurts him. He doesn't know how to be happy because he hasn't been taught, so he's simply content. Mildred is Montag's wife and she has completely been ruined by the system of government that they live in. So much so that she attempts to take her own life. Mildred is empty inside and has basically become a machine. She almost overdosed on sedatives, but she is stopped by Montag, who walks in and saves her before it's too late (E. Eller np). Mildred is a sort of victim. It's too late for her because she's been destroyed by this terrible environment. It's unclear how she's actually feeling because she takes a pill everyday to numb herself, as required by the government. Perhaps this is why Montag leaves. it's not too late for him, and he has a chance at saving himself from this terrible mess that has already damaged and nearly destroyed his wife.
The characters teach Montag an abundance about the society he was so accustomed to, and they have very different point of views. Beatty's point of view comes from the system that has been created, but Mildred has directly been affected by the system (Watt np). We, the readers, get to see …show more content…
Book burnings are a part of history. They happened after World War II in Nazi Germany (“Fahrenheit” np). The Germans used book burnings as a form of repression or oppression. They used them to try to control the people. They would control the people's minds and that's how Bradbury envisions the world becoming if they did succeed. Ben Franklin was America's first fireman and the fire that he brought down was the Royalists in the colonies (Wolfe np). Montag's boss was trying to explain to him why books were awful and he said that throughout history, they have brought nothing good to America. He said they make people question things and that shouldn't be happening. There were bombing in Japan that created a dystopian society (Watt np), Bradbury gets his idea of a dystopian society that is controlled by technology from the bombings that happened only a few years before. Bradbury gives some roots in from democracy that led to why there was a rise of American mass culture (Wolfe np). Bradbury explains why the government outlawed books. This was because of the American mass culture going against them as they did in other
