In this source, Censorship, the author, Bradley Steffens, provides an overview of censorship and its effects on a community. This book gives the history about censorship, explains the First and Fourth Amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America, and insightfully sheds light on how freedom of speech and freedom of the press protect Americans against censorship. However, this book does briefly address expressions and activities (in addition to censorship) that infringe on the First and Fourth Amendment. At the end of this book two helpful lists are provided: several organizations’ (such as the American Library Association) contact information is provided and suggestions for further reading. Censorship, defined as the “suppression of ideas and information that certain persons— individuals, groups or government officials—find objectionable or dangerous,” by the American Library Association, occurs every day. Many people think of censorship as a tool utilized by governments to control their citizens, but it occurs much more frequently than that. What people never realize is that the everyday scrutiny and judgement that we place on each other and our ideas is just as if not more harmful than government censorship. We do not suppress these behaviors out of malice, but out of true concern for the wellbeing of our society. We worry that exposure to adult topics will tarnish the purity of our children, or that the freedom to proclaim our beliefs will somehow affect the rights of others.…

Censorship has long been a part of American culture, shaping the overall morals of the people. This is a point made in the excerpt from The Atlantic Monthly as the writer states that some will disagree with something being allowed to be shown in front of children while others believe it should be allowed. This issue is still present to this day and many people maintain very ambiguous opinions on the topic. These ambiguous opinions are capitalized on in the article as being between moralists and artists; those who believe these artworks being shown is evil and then those who only see the beauty in the works. The writer sums this up well, claiming that “Moralists will justify it for one set of reasons; artists will acede to it for another.”.…

When a person has no choice but to trust what they hear, news becomes a dangerous topic, or more accurately transforms from sure fact to discrete fabrications. Once people become complacent, there is no one to question whether the information people are being fed is truthful at all. It remains true to this day that “Because media is such a large part of people’s lives today...if...information is not being given in full or truthfully, then the society is left uneducated” (“Censorship Effects on Society” 1). In countries where only one source of information is available to the public, it is almost routine that the information is biased and filled with political propaganda. In reducing the amount of sources, the people have no other opinions presented to them than the ones that the government wants them to have.…

Selective Censorship seems to be a large debate in today’s world of technology. Through the use of television, as well as internet on cell phones, Chromebooks, and regular desk top computers, companies speak to children primarily by the use of commercials. This may sound like a freedom of speech and seem open and honest. Actually children often get persuaded to think differently, purchase certain items and accept behaviors that might not agree with their family traditions.…

In America today, we see a lot of Television shows that blur or censor specific content, specifically nudity and foul language. In other countries and communities around the world censorship of the human body and language this would seem out of the norm. In Germany, television displays almost no censorship and nationally broadcasts frontal and back nudity without hesitation. Westernized thoughts and idealism of what is proper and acceptable behavior on broadcasted entertainment tends to be divided when it pertains to the human body.…

Do you think the 1st amendment should be held firm with no restrictions or should it be a guide for the country? Does censorship play a protective or restrictive role in the society? I believe that the first Amendment is but a guide for our country and it's freedoms are based upon it. I also think that censorship plays a protective role in America because of the “government's act of banning or altering media, speech, or performances. ”-Via HG.ORG…

Study shows that censorship has been around since about 300 BC, which is a really long time. When someone or some rule tries to stop or control you from saying what you want to say or do what you want to do, that would be a form of censorship. Also, it holds you back sometimes from learning new things, because the government, will censor different things so you cannot find out about it or learn about it. Certain censorship can be direct or indirect, and can also be legal or illegal. Self-censorship is when a person will censor his own work, so they will not feel any type of responsibilities if something bad happens to someone because of their work.…

Even though censorship has occurred throughout history and is constantly, there has always been a similar reason for censoring others. Usually, censorship is used to not allow people to learn about other opinions than that of the ruling party. Governments or religious institutions are the most known parties that censor others because of books or other works that express views contrary to that of state or beliefs that seem threatening to their welfare (“Banned Books”). Some smaller authorities like adults ban works based off the inappropriateness for youth. Censorship is people trying to make others think one way, which is their way.…
