Censorship Case Study

Throughout history, there have been several cases of groups trying to prohibit and/or ban books from their institutions. Thankfully, these cases usually result in those groups losing. For instance, In Case v. Unified School District No. 233, 908 F.Supp. 864 (D. Kan. 1995), a Kansas school board attempted to remove the novel Annie on My Mind for its portrayal of a teenage lesbian couple, claiming that it was unsuitable for education. The federal court found that the school board actually violated the first amendment rights of its students by objecting to the novel’s ideology and premise, regardless of how controversial and/or offensive to the board that premise may be. However, these public, as a result, is left ill-equipped to handle any form of content being censored in the real world. For instance, if a highly conservative neighborhood censors all references to LGBTQ individuals within their media, the members of said community will eventually have no factual reference for gay people. If certain members of the community turn out to be gay, than the rest of the citizenry will have no intelligent ideas for how to deal with them. The most likely outcome from such a situation would be a witch hunt for the gay citizens. In conclusion, censorship results in ignorance, and in ignorance people hurt one another. Contrary to popular belief, there does lie an intrinsic difference between censorship and political correctness. People should not censor literature, but they should definitely contradict it. Mein Kampf is an absolutely horrendous piece of literary history, but it should still serve as a testament to modern history. This does not mean that the populace should go around espousing the views represented in Mein Kampf; they should openly seek to oppose said views.
