Remember the day when you could say anything you wanted without worrying about someone telling you, “That is politically incorrect”or “do not say that, that could offend someone.” People long to be able to speak their mind in public without anyone thinking that they are weird or crazy. This theory applies in movie theaters, grocery stores, shopping malls and even schools. Lately it seems as though you have to retain your thoughts inside your mind and not say anything out loud. People have to censor what they say so that no one will be offended, but how can you please everyone? Have you ever thought about censorship? One example of censorship or challenging is in the play Inherit the Wind by: Jerome Lawrence and Robert Edwin Lee. In the play Bertram Cates, a high school biology teacher in a small town named Hillsboro; who during one of his classes started teaching from an evolution textbook which was strictly against the law. Castes was soon put on trial, was found guilty and had to pay a fine of one hundred dollars. Bertram Cates wanted to show his students other possibilities of what they could believe in. Students attend school to learn with the intent of broadening their view of the world, and showing them new possibilities; and that is what Bertram Cates was doing. Rachel Brown, who was also a school teacher in Hillsboro, says during the play. “A schoolteacher is a public servant: I think he should do what the law and the school-board want him to” (Jerome and Lee 33). This quote shows what Rachel believes in and that this is what she thinks a school teacher has to be for the rest of the community or government. In a child’s life, besides their parents, teachers make the most influence on a student’s life. That town made it illegal to teach anything other than what is taught in the bible. In the current day that we live in, that law is still in place, but now it is the other way around. Public schools have made it illegal to teach creationism. They are blinded by the theory of evolution. In the biology classroom the teacher teaches what is written in the evolution textbook like it is a fact and they make it seem as though it is the only book. Yes it is a book but the evolution textbook is not the only book. Students should be able to choose whether they would like to study evolution or creation not just force one belief upon them. As an example, in Inherit the Wind Bertram Cates is put into jail for teaching evolution to his students when it was strictly against the law; so now think about it. In the country where we live, there is freedom of speech and freedom of religion, but if a teacher were to teach creation in a public school where it is strictly against the law, they would most likely be exactly where Bertram Cates was in Inherit the Wind; be fined, put in jail and put on trial. Many people need to understand that when creation is being taught, it is not meant to offend anyone. Everyone has the right to speak their mind and say anything they want. It is not fair how evolution can be thought anywhere and no one say anything, but the second anyone
