Despite the many controversies surrounding his life, Thomas DeCarlo Callaway, more commonly known by the stage name of CeeLo Green, has had plenty of musical success stemming from his hit single “Crazy” while being a part of the group Gnarls Barkley.” This song was popular in the U.S. reaching number 2 in the Billboard Top 100. This song was also Number 1 in many other countries, most notably in the United Kingdom. CeeLo Green has won 5 Grammys and has been nominated for even more prestigious musical awards, so it is evident that his talents have not gone unnoticed. What makes CeeLo unique is the fact that he isn’t afraid to speak his mind. While some view music as a job, career, or hobby, CeeLo views his music as a mission. CeeLo said one in an interview that he wanted to be a beacon on light in darkness and that he wanted to be a poster boy for change. When making these statements great humility was shown as he was saying that he, a nobody, had reached the top of the mountain meaning that anyone who works hard can do the same. In CeeLo case, this was not an empty statement as he had evidence and life experience to back it up especially with his unsuccessful stint as a member of Goodie Mob. However, he overcame the obstacles in part thanks to his run with Gnarls Barkley showing that the possibilities are countless if you are willing to put the work in. CeeLo was hard at work even as a child for he had dreams of one day becoming a DJ. Guided with inspiration by Mr. Mixx and DJ Jazzy Jeff, CeeLo found himself working the knobs of his auntie’s boom box. CeeLo’s imagination made him feel as though he was on a DJ set while playing with the boom box. Today he continues to reminisce on this memory being reassured that it was not problematic to invest in himself instead of continuing the experience of being a part of an unfulfilling musical group.
