Cellular networks are a type of wireless WAN. Various technologies are utilized in cellular networks but there are only three basic modes of signal communications. These are simplex, half duplex and full duplex. In simplex transmissions the signal goes in only one direction and this type is usually seen in television and radio stations. Half duplex signaling is bi-directional but each signal has to wait its turn because only one can travel at a time. Examples of half duplex are the push-to-talk Nextel phones and standard walkie-talkies. The third communication mode that allows for simultaneous bi-directional signal transfer is known as full duplex. Cellular technologies utilize full duplex (Gow & Smith, 2006). Mobile medical applications are on the rise and they include applications for the management of chronic diseases, iPrescribe, remote access to medical records and lab results, and diagnosing medical conditions over smartphone applications (Kabachinski, 2011). The mobile applications are being used by the consumer as well as the healthcare provider and the continued use of these mobile health applications is expected to rise. Mobile health applications address many issues in healthcare today like access and prevention. A base station for microwaves is line of sight (LOS) dependent and two stations can connect up to 48km if they are in LOS (Cowley, 2012). The further a microwave signal travels between relays the lower the possible data rate (Cowley, 2012). Microwave transmissions utilize an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) technique. The OFDM technique basically splits the high-speed data into multiple lower-speed signals and places them in subcarriers, this creates an efficient use of the radio spectrum and allows the microwave signal to travel with very little interference (Cowley, 2012).
