Cell Phones While Driving: Should It Be Legal?

As drivers, we face many instances of danger while behind the wheel: colliding with other drivers or even crashing in to pedestrians if a driver is not careful. The distraction of a driver only heightens said dangers and can be controlled. While some may argue that using a handheld cell phone while driving should be legal, they are wrong because without a law in place prohibiting this action, this will hinder drivers socially, economically, and politically. First, using our phones while driving is leaving us as people more socially out of touch. As a generation, we are very detached from one another due to our use of cell phones, and browsing through social media while on the road is yet another place where our focus is not where …show more content…
Things of this nature can be avoided, and instead of putting our phones on silent when getting into the driver's seat, people believe they can multitask and put the lives of other people at risk. These scenarios never end well, and it is evident that the actions of those who may disagree with this law will greatly harm us all economically with the burden these crashes bring financially. Thirdly, there are people who believe that this law is unnecessary, and question the need for it from a political standpoint. Citizens of states that already have this law in place may think that the prohibiting of the use of a cell phone while driving means that their emergency situations have to be put on hold until they are no longer behind the wheel. A friend of mine was once on her way home and got several messages from her family telling her to answer their calls due to the fact that it was an emergency. In the situation that this law was active in her location, she would have needed to pull over before she could legally tend to a serious family situation, which runs the risk of something going wrong in the time that she could not respond to her family. But making the use of cell phones illegal while in the car is only to

For example it states "The simple fact is that it is really dangerous when you talk on your cell phone and drive at the same time. Hand-held cell phones are responsible for 1,000 accidents every month, and we have seen that there are very dangerous situations sometimes". This law makes it easier for drivers to make a call and not worry about having one hand on the wheel. Also by using this law it may make drivers not use there cellphones in the car, because they don't want to buy a phone headset. Perhaps the most important reason to pass this law is to set a good example for the young passengers in the car. Children observe and often adopt many of the behaviors of their parents. Thus, parents must make the conscious choice to stress interpersonal contact as opposed to screen time. They must put down the cell phone and concentrate on driving above all else. By passing a law to ban cell phone use while driving, states will aid parents in raising their children to become safe drivers as adults.…
