In todays world technology is growing at a very rapid rate and people are constantly on their cell phone talking as well as gather information about others. People have become addicted to their cell phones and seem to live their everyday lives through them and do not know when to put their phones down. This has become a growing problem in the United States, so much so that people are on their cell phones while driving a motorized vehicle. Textinganddrivingsafety.com had found that, “text messaging makes a crash up to 23 times more likely”, they also came to find that, “dialing your cell phone puts you 2.8 times more at risk of a crash, Talking/listening has you 1.3 times more at risk, and reaching for a device is 1.4 times more dangerous.” …show more content…
Eating and driving has been proven to be very distracting while driving. A study done by, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) concluded that, “those who eat and drive increase the odds of an accident by 80%! They also concluded that 65% of near miss accidents are caused by distracted drivers fussing with food and drinks.” (drive-safely.net). Surprisingly eating and driving is dangerous and can lead to problems. It is said that the most dangerous thing to drink while driving is coffee. If you are to spill hot coffee on yourself while driving it is shown to lead to accidents. “If you look down to grab your coffee cup, or to manipulate it into the cup-holder, you participate in visual distraction. Although your attention and eyes only be distracted from the road for seconds, your reaction time shortens immensely. In addition, many drivers admit to looking down at their coffee cup when hitting a bump or pothole in the road since these small bumps cause spills.” (Shook and Stone). There are more ways people get distracted while driving. With technology constantly evolving and adapting to peoples needs, we are starting to see cars with “hands free” phone connections. This helps drivers talk through the car to use their cell phones while being able to keep their eyes on the road and hands on the wheel. Hands free technology will hook your phone up to the car and allow you to use a cell phone safely while operating a motorized vehicle, but we will get into this later. There are also many new applications for your cell phone that can be downloaded to help keep people from getting distracted while driving.
