Cell Phones: The Negative Effects Of Texting And Language Skills

Register to read the introduction… Often, during family dinners or friendly meet ups, people like to put their phones in the center of the table to avoid distractions from other people’s conversations. Although phone may be distracting, they are known to improve language skills. In 2010, a study was found by the British Journal of Developmental and Psychology that texting improves reading and language development. The use of text-speak, languages specific to text messages, positively impacted reading abilities. The misspelling and acronyms did not carry over into academic work and encouraged users to engage with the written word (Fleck). An Israeli study found that texting serves as an emotional relief for teens who chat with friends in a distressed state. The relief strengthens the bonds of friendship in a way similar to in person relationships. Teens feel more comfortable to open up their feelings without speaking or facing the person. Introverts who are overwhelmed by thoughts and emotions, find it easier to express themselves they may not be comfortable to talk about in person. It avoids uncomfortable conversations in person and can lead to a more open relationship. It maintains relationships and keeps them grounded in reality because of the form of communication.
