Look around at the people surrounding you, are any of them on their cell phones, are you using a phone, or are you carrying one with you? I can almost guarantee you have answered ‘yes’ to at least one of these questions. If you did then you are one of the astounding 91% of adults in America who own a cellular device. Even more surprising, 74% of teenaged citizens have access to cellular devices on a daily basis. With statistics like these, it is easy to see why issues are constantly brought to attention relating to cell phones. However, one of the most important concepts to ensure is that a protection is in place for all owners’ rights; otherwise, nearly our whole society will be endangered. Today’s issue, relates to protecting America’s youth, the future of our country. It is imperative we ensure that juveniles who engage in consensual sexting behaviors are not prosecuted criminally. To begin with, this is not a new issue. Simply put, teenagers have always been curious about sex and in the past the only difference was the pictures were not distributed electronically. If a message with sexual content is being distributed without consent a major issue exists. Instead of attacking consensual sexting between teenagers we should be putting greater emphasis on stopping unjust incidents. Schools should be required to discuss the consequences of unwarranted sexting for both those participating and those who are harmed in their health classes. Moreover, schools should have a guidance department for students targeted to talk confidentially and safely. I believe that if we can educate teenagers on the negative results of unsolicited sexting and also provide a positive place for them to turn when hurt, we can save lives on numerous
