Did you know millions of kids are affected in school by using their cell phones? An education shapes a child’s life in many ways. Phones affecting children during the school day will affect grades and could affect the path of life they choose. Phones need to be banned from schools. America needs to take the steps for the children of the future and banned phones. Studies have proved with cell phones in school there are lower grades, students become very distracted, and a huge increase in cyber bullying. Banning cell phones will stop students from checking social media and will help cut back students from posting embarrassing or hurtful comments on the internet. Student on their phones don’t only distract themselves but also distracts the students around them. A social studies teacher, Doug Bishop, sees text being sent in his class all the time and his best students have complained their preoccupied peers affect them while trying to learn (Bimbaum). Many students do under the table texting which leads to cheating and causing other forms of distraction (Bimbaum). Students now have cell phones with huge amounts of memory, this now allows them to watch movies and listen to music for hours while in class (Ndabaga). These phone distractions cause students to lose on average an hour a week of productive school work (LaCasse). London School of Economics learned eliminating phones in school can assist in learning (LaCasse). London School of Economics also believes that prohibiting phones in school will cut distractions and reduce the education achievement gap (LaCasse). This form of bullying is known as cyberbullying. Cell phones being allowed in schools have made cyberbullying very easy for students. Many experts are finding that apps on cell phones allow bullies to remain anonymous and promote them to be more malicious (“Introduction to Cell Phones in Schools”, 2014). Twenty-six percent of teens that have cell phones state that somebody has harassed them by using a cell phone (“Introduction to Cell Phones in Schools”, 2014). These students have no way to escape. Cell phones are in people’s hands constantly and putting constant fear in bully victims. Cyberbullying by cell phones makes students have “bigger mouths through text” and use extremely harsh and hurtful words (“Introduction to Cell Phones in Schools”, 2014). Victims of cyberbullying feel like they have no way out since text and social media can be sent instantly. Lady Gaga was a victim of cyberbullying and found it hard to focus in class because it became so extreme (Patchin and Hinduja). This constant form of bullying causes distraction and worry in the victim and prevents them from learning or studying for their classes (Patchin and Hinduja). Having a cell phone in schools allows bullying to go viral and a whole school can begin to gang up on the bully victim (Patchin and Hinduja). Studies show that bullies are usually a peer which could be a former friend, former boyfriend or girlfriend or etc.
