Student on their phones don’t only distract themselves but also distracts the students around them. A social studies teacher, Doug Bishop, sees text being sent in his class all the time and his best students have complained their preoccupied peers affect them while trying to learn (Bimbaum). Many students do under the table texting which leads to cheating and causing other forms of distraction (Bimbaum). Students now have cell phones with huge amounts of memory, this now allows them to watch movies and listen to music for hours while in class (Ndabaga). This form of bullying is known as cyberbullying. Cell phones being allowed in schools have made cyberbullying very easy for students. Many experts are finding that apps on cell phones allow bullies to remain anonymous and promote them to be more malicious (“Introduction to Cell Phones in Schools”, 2014). Twenty-six percent of teens that have cell phones state that somebody has harassed them by using a cell phone (“Introduction to Cell Phones in Schools”, 2014). These students have no way to escape. Cell phones are in people’s hands constantly and putting constant fear in bully victims. Cyberbullying by cell phones makes students have “bigger mouths through text” and use extremely harsh and hurtful words (“Introduction to Cell Phones in Schools”, 2014). Victims of cyberbullying feel like they have no way out since text and social media can be sent instantly. Lady Gaga was a victim of cyberbullying and found it hard to focus in class because it became so extreme (Patchin and Hinduja). This constant form of bullying causes distraction and worry in the victim and prevents them from learning or studying for their classes (Patchin and Hinduja). Having a cell phone in schools allows bullying to go viral and a whole school can begin to gang up on the bully victim (Patchin and Hinduja). Studies show that bullies are usually a peer which could be a former friend, former boyfriend or girlfriend or etc.
