Cell Phones Pros And Cons Study

Cell phones have become a huge part of our society since their invention in 1946 , especially since the introduction of the first commercially available smart phone in 1994 . A study done by Catalyst in 2015 showed that 68% of Canadians own smartphones, which is a whopping 24% increase from their 2014 study . With cell phone ownership skyrocketing, we must begin to weigh the pros and cons of having these devices in the palm of our hand and determine if the impact that they are having on society is positive or negative. With applications such as Skype, Facetime, Messages, and Snapchat, it has never been easier to stay connected. Users are able to contact people from all over the world with the touch of a button or with the tap of a screen. University students can Skype home to their parents when they miss them, grandparents can Facetime their grandchildren, and friends can move thousands of kilometers apart and remain connected through social media. Unfortunately, the connections that we have via our cell phones distracts us from having connections in person. People are choosing to send a text to communicate their thoughts rather than talk in person, users are walking across busy intersections without looking up from their phones and drivers are texting while they should be paying attention to the road. “At any given time, 1 in 20 Canadian drivers is using a cell phone while driving.” That amounts to 5% of drivers using their cell phones while operating a vehicle. According to a survey, young drivers between the ages of 16 and 20 were asked if they texted while driving, 80% of them admitted that they have. In another study, 27% of drivers admitted to checking Facebook while operating a vehicle. With numbers as high as these there huge risk for accidents due to distracted driving. As previously discussed, cell phones have become a huge part of our lives, statistics state that 68% of Canadians own smartphones . With the many positive influences that cell phones have given users; connection, security, and access to the world. However, with the positive influences we also run into the negative impacts that it has on our society; dangerous disconnection and distraction, cyberbullying, and social media sheltering users. Though the pros are very positive and have made life much easier, the negative connotations outweigh the pros and have made the world a more dangerous place to live in. We have given cell phone brands, social media companies, and anonymous users the ability to warp our views on society, control us, and distract us from our everyday
