Decreasing Cell Phone Usage by Using Prompting during Certain Durations of Time

Abstract A self-management study was conducted to examine the success and effects of prompting on decreasing the time spent using a cell phone. In this self-management study, the participant was studied throughout the day at specific time ranges in the environment of only a household. Reducing cell phone usage was solicited as a means to reduce the risk of negative health problems and negative social problems that may affect the completion of everyday life tasks and the ability to live a preferred quality of life. This increased in 2013 to an average of 91% of people owning a cellphone (Rainie, 2013). These statistics reveal the increasing trend of cell phone usage that is occurring in the United States. Studies find that every year cell phone usage significantly increases; this means that every year technology has a larger significant impact on the human population. In this study, the experimenter aimed to evaluate how to effectively decrease cell phone usage through the technique of prompting to remind the subject not to use the cellphone.
Looking at the addiction aspect of cell phone usage, Roberts (2014) did a study on cell phone activities and addiction among college students and concluded that on average, a college student spends approximately nine hours of their day on their cell phone. This approximation of nine hours a day includes any kind of cell phone usage, including such things as talking on the phone, texting, playing games, and using the internet. Some aspects that are affected by the increased amount of cellphone usage are driving, listening to teachers and participating in schoolwork, working, studying, goal planning, and relationships. At this point in time, many people are relying on their cell phones in every aspect of their life and it is becoming more of an addiction. Some factors that influence this addiction to cell phones and increase the amount of time spent using the cell phone are surfing the web, game usage, and social media websites. The experimenter predicts that the intervention of this study will have a considerable effect in helping to reduce the amount of time that the participant?s cell phone is used. The use of prompting in this study is a well-known method that can have an extensive effect on changing an individual?s behavior to a specified target behavior in an imperative manner. A simple piece of paper can be used to train the participant to decrease phone usage as long as the paper is in front of the participant at all times during the

    According to an Academic Journal from the International Journal of Preventative Medicine, many adolescents are becoming not only dependent on their smartphones but are building up an addiction to them.
