As aware of by most, one of the leading diseases that is causing a threat to our society currently is cancer. The prevalence of this disease is overwhelming and the treatment is possible; however, there is still need for further investigation into the cause of this disease before ¬¬¬¬¬it is thoroughly understood. Through increasing research there has been a connection made that cancer is the result of cells that continually replicate and causes for neoplasm to develop at an alarming rate (2). Neoplasm is the growth of unwanted tissue in some part of the body and is one of the signs of cancer (4). This experiment aims at trying to understand one of the possible mechanisms for this continuous tissue growth.

The latter has been increasingly studied and it has been found that the disruption of the circadian clock has been related to disorders in humans, such as cancer (2). The focus of this experiment is the role of a specific circadian clock gene on the ability to regenerate cells in planarian. Even prior to birth, from humans down to microscopic bacteria, there are a number of genes that dictate the nearly twenty-four-hour rhythm that develops a process which controls one’s physiology, behavior, and even gene expression, this process is known as the organism’s circadian rhythm (2). Of the many organisms that contain these circadian genes, the one organism that coordinates their rhythm in an interesting manner is the freshwater planarian (Schmidtea mediterranea), which is the model for this experiment. The planarian is a flatworm that eternally maintains its juvenile stage and has a very impressive ability to regenerate, which makes them an excellent model for use in the

Additionally, cancer cells can ignore signals from the body that stop cell growth and that cause programmed cell death.1 There are many factors that play a role in a cancer diagnosis. These include the environment and personal habits, such as nutrition or smoking. Several forms of cancer have familial pre-disposition, which appear to be linked to an inherited mutation in suppressor genes such as the p53 gene.…

The simple but revolutionary organism Drosophila melanogaster has intricate properties that are studied to find its relations with human genes. Not only is D. melanogaster a model organism for its rapid growth, inexpensive culturing, and easy modifications, the Drosophila can provide more in-depth scientific analysis that can solve human diseases. The model organism D. melanogaster is studied to find ground-breaking research in neurology, sleep, cancer, and drug discovery. The multivariable effects in cancer can be studied by observing D. melanogaster because of its tumorigenesis caused by genes and its surrounding environment. The development of tumors in D. melanogaster is similar to the pathway of a tumor in a mammalian cell as it undergoes…

While PTC carries the best prognosis among the variable types of thyroid carcinomas with survival rates ranging from 92% to 95% at 5 years and from 89% to 90% at 10 years,17 the effect of cervical nodal metastasis on survival is difficult to assess.18 In the absence of a survival benefit, potential morbidities and medical economics, the value of the conventional use of neck dissection is not accepted.18 PCND in clinically node-negative DTC patients remains controversial.19 Patients with PTC are usually young, and cervical metastases are not uncommon.20 The mean age of our patients was 30±2.3 years, which is comparable to other studies.21,22 The female to male ratio was also similar to previous studies as 3.2:1.23 In accordance with previous studies, CND revealed metastasis in 43% of patients experienced neck dissection.24 Also, other studies recorded this occult metastasis to be between 40 and 90%.25…

Skin cells become cancerous by going through mitosis uncontrollably. When mitosis is working properly cells are only replicated when they need to replace a dying or damaged cells, but sometimes this process does not work and starts to create and divide cells when they are not needed. After many times of division the DNA within the cell starts to have mutations and this will then not be seen or detected by the body. The cells keep mutating and dividing until it develops into a tumor. When the tumor breaks through the basement membrane it gains blood vessels in a process called Angiogenesis.…

Hello Sarah, I think you made a great choice in picking the American Cancer society to discuss. Cancer has affected us all in one way or another whether it is through a family member or friend who has gotten this terrible illness. Hopefully one day there will be a cure to do away with all forms of cancer. You have chosen some very important concepts in your discussion that should be a main focus of the organization. I think another strong concept of the organization should be volunteerism.…

Pathophysiology: Cells in the body go through a natural state of mitosis where they replicate copies of themselves. Once a cell realizes there isn’t any more room for growing or sees a defect in itself, the cell goes through apoptosis (cell death). However, there are instances where a cell doesn’t recognize it has a defect or mutation and it starts to affect the shape of the cell. Once this mutated cell starts mitosis, it will regenerate a lot of undifferentiated cells, which turn into a neoplasm or tumor. Some tumors are benign and do not cause any problems, but other tumors can be malignant or cancerous.…

Pancreatic Cancer Cancer is one of the most executioner diseases. The National Cancer Institute defines cancer as the body’s cells begin to divide without stopping and spread into surrounding tissues. “Cancer can start almost anywhere in the human body, which is made up of trillions of cells. Normally, human cells grow and divide to form new cells as the body needs them. When cells grow old or become damaged, they die, and new cells take their place.”…

The term neoplasm refers to an abnormal growth of tissue caused by the quick division of cells that have undergone some form of change. The body is made up of trillions of cells that grow, divide, and die in an orderly fashion. This process is a strongly controlled one that is controlled by the DNA equipment within the cell. When a person is growing up, the cells of the body rapidly divide, but once adulthood is reached, cells generally only divide to replace worn-out, dying cells or to repair injured cells.…
