Aseptic technique is highly encouraged to prevent catastrophic introduction of foreign particles or other cells into the cell culture. Contamination in cell culturing is divided into two categories. Chemical contamination refers to incorporation of the wrong medium, water, or other chemicals into the culture container. Biological contamination involves the addition of bacteria, fungi, viruses, other microorganisms and other cell lines into the correct cell line being cultured. Due to the prevalence of contamination, much emphasis is placed on sanitation of media, reagents, working space, instruments and other necessary items needed to carry out culturing. It is standard that work done in the laminar flow hood should be completed in one sitting as quickly as possible by one person.
