"First time I got the full sight of Shug Avery" she says "I thought I had turned into a man," and from the description that is given by Celie, we can see that Shug Avery is a big element in bringing Celie out of her "tree" like emotionless state and bringing her back to life . Through the framework of cognitive theory one could say that Krissy’s internal turmoil over leaving Dorian stemmed from a cognitive distortion that a wife was required to submit to her husband. Krissy’s development of this maladaptive thought process on the ideal relationship between husband and wife started in her early childhood.
