The book is written by Melton McLaurin who is a history professor and has a deep interest in race relations. His interest in the subject is reflected in his books and other pieces of Art including the book Celia a Slave. When he worked at his grandfather store he came to learn about the fact that black people were living in an entirely different world. He started to view the black-white relationships in a new manner and his interest developed further as an art when he depicted his thoughts in his work that was later published.

A slave was considered to be the property of his master and was not given the basic human rights. By discussing the story of Celia, the book actually highlights various social evils that are deeply rooted in the society where racial discrimination is a significant attribute. Another cruel reality of human beings is not to take stand against abuse just to ensure personal benefits and interests. There were many whites who also chose to take Celia's side determining that she had committed this crime in self-defense. But not even they could save her because slaves had no legal rights in self-defense to their owners. She could have had a chance of being saved if more of the people that knew what she was having to endure would have spoken up or helped
