Cedar Point: A Short Story

Superior Essays
It all began with a simple phone call one night after dinner. “Joe,” Joe’s father hollers up the stairs, “it’s for you. It’s Jackie, and she sounds upset.” As Joe comes downstairs to pick up the phone, he is not happy. Joe is tired and had looked forward to a nice quiet evening at home, not another useless adventure with Jackie. Thirty minutes later, however, Jackie’s 2007 black Ford Escape swings into Joe’s driveway, and Jackie is leaning on the horn before the car can come to a full stop. Joe grabs his coat from this couch and walks out of his front door with all of the enthusiasm of a man going to stand before a firing squad. Joe and Jackie have been friends their whole lives. They grew up as next-door neighbors and do everything together. …show more content…
Jackie drops the bag of food as a loud echo goes through the aisle and she starts frantically calling Joe. While the phone is ringing for what seems like hours, Jackie starts thinking deeper about the note. Within a few seconds, it hits her. Cedar Point was Jackie and Steven’s first date, and they stayed in the Cedar Point hotel in room 226. When Joe finally picks up the phone, Jackie lectures to him about the note, and demands they start their trip to Cedar Point immediately.
The following morning, Joe and Jackie pack their bags and head out the door to start the journey. While Jackie continues to have an overwhelming amount of excitement, Joe is keeping more to himself, realizing that once they arrive at Cedar Point, there might just be another clue.
By the evening, Joe and Jackie arrive at Cedar Point and check into the hotel room 227 because 226 was booked. As soon as they arrive to their room, Jackie runs to room 226 and starts frantically banging on the door. “Steven! I know you are in there! Where are my dogs!” Jackie shrieks so loud that the people in the other rooms can hear. Opening the door, Steven stands with a smirk on his face, but no dogs in sight.
“Wow. looks like you figured out my clue,” Steven laughs while crossing his arms in front of his chest and looking Jackie up and down slowly. Jackie’s mouth gets dry and she feels

I want my dogs now!” Jackie shouts while turning around from the door and approaching Steven with her first in the air. Instantly, Steven gets nervous and can taste an acidic taste in his mouth. Trying to reassure Jackie that her dogs are safe and being cared for by his friend Larry, he begins to confess his deep love for Jackie and begs for another chance.
“I took your dogs because I know this is the only way you would ever agree to meet me,” Steven explains while pacing back and forth in an anxious manner, “all I’m asking from you is to agree to come on one more date with me. I know I made some mistakes, but I want to make it up to you. Let me take you out to lunch tomorrow, and I’ll give you your dogs back right after.” Although Jackie is furious, she remains calm and gives herself a few seconds for her heart rate to slow down as she forms a plan in her head to be sure Steven is caught for his wrongdoings.
“Okay,” Jackie agrees while crossing her arms in front of her chest, “I will go on one more date with you tomorrow afternoon at one, but my dogs better be ready to come back with me right after.” Surprised by Jackie’s quick agreement to his request, Steven assures her that she will not regret her

George Saunders’ “Puppy” and Toni Morrison’s “Recitatif” tell of two different stories with different characters in presumably different time periods. Both authors have drastically different backgrounds that bring them to these tales. However, their works of literature are more comparable than one would initially think. From the perspective of the reader, the intent of Puppy was to stress that there is often more to something than meets the eye and that because of this, we tend to want for things that we do not really understand. The families that appear in this story are perceived differently on the surface than they actually are underneath everything.…
