Abstract Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy is considered an autoimmune disorder of the peripheral nervous system. It is the chronic form of Guillain-Barre syndrome, the difference between the two diseases is GBS is an acute inflammatory disease of peripheral nerves and most patients recover spontaneously while CIDP requires more attention. The cause of CIDP is unknown it is believed that it may be caused due to the immune response of the body attacking the nerve fibers causing demyelination to take place. Chronic inflammatory demyelination polyneuropathy is not curable but it is treatable, however due to variation of onset of symptoms per individual treatment methods contrast amongst on another producing a trial and error to take place. Due to the nature of the …show more content…
Austin went forth and proceeded to evaluate the patient and saw that the patient was reacting well with the steroids administered and was speculated to be CIDP (Albert and Knoefel 1984). In 1975 individuals who were reflecting the same assessments were said to have chronic inflammatory polyradiculoneuropathy, until demyelination was discovered to be distinguished as a primary factor the name was then changed to chronic inflammatory demyelination polyneuropathy (Albert and Knoefel 1984). CIDP can go by various other terms such as chronic relapsing polyneuropathy (CRP) or by chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy due to the involvement of nerve fibers (Kissel 2003). Common onsets of symptoms are around 30’s to 60’s but symptoms may arise at any age (Dalakas 2011). The cause of the disease is still unknown but it is believe that it is the body’s immune response that plays a role in the disease thus causing the body to deteriorate the myelin sheath on neurons (Lewis 2013). The nature of the disease includes these symptoms but not limited to numbing

GBS progressively starts to own a person’s life, being educated about this disease, the symptoms and effects, and the treatments will be beneficial. Two brilliant scientists discovered this syndrome, they found out what the syndrome is, and how the doctors could start diagnosing patients. Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a chronic (lasting greater than six months) pain condition that most often affects one limb (arm, leg, hand, or foot). CRPS is believed to be caused by damage to, or malfunction of, the peripheral and central nervous systems. CRPS is divided into two types: CRPS-I and CRPS-II. Individuals without a confirmed nerve injury are classified as having CRPS-I (previously known as reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome). CRPS-II (previously known as causalgia) is when there is an associated, confirmed nerve injury.…

Immune Mediated Development of Guillain-Barré Syndrome Guillain-Barré syndrome is an acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy that presents with ascending motor weakness, sensory abnormalities, and loss of reflexes. Guillain-Barré syndrome can be divided into 4 major clinically distinct forms: acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (AIDP), the Miller Fisher syndrome (MFS), acute motor axonal neuropathy (AMAN), and acute sensorimotor axonal neuropathy (AMSAN). There are a number of potential triggers that in genetically susceptible individuals can cause this disease such as surgery, vaccinations, or infections with Campylobacter jejuni, cytomegalovirus, Epstein-Barr virus, or Mycoplasma pneumoniae1. The mechanism underlying the development of this autoimmune response is not completely understood and is the topic of this discussion. The case described is a man recently diagnosed with the AIDP variant of Guillain-Barré…

Laboratories may have multiple certifications for multiple types of testing. CLIA has waived some test that has been determined to be simple, easy, and has a low-risk of erroneous test results. These waived tests are performed in doctors’ offices instead of sent off to an outside lab because they are less expensive to run.…

NMDA receptors are proteins that control electrical impulses in the brain. Their functions are critical for judgement, perception of reality, human interaction, the formation and retrieval of memory, and the control of unconscious activities (such as breathing, swallowing, etc), also known as autonomic functions. Common symptoms are flu-like symptoms, speech dysfunction, loss of consciousness, full body spasms, erratic breathing, blood pressure and heart rate, sleep disorders, seizures, impaired vision and hearing, and cognitive and behavioural disturbances such as confused thinking, hallucinations,…
