Social anxiety has different ways of being treated. The first and most common method is psychotherapy. Psychological therapy teaches a person to recognize negative thoughts and gain skills of how to gain confidence in social situations. Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) is the most common type of therapy for social anxiety. In this therapy someone gradually works up to situations that they fear most. Patients may also be involved in role playing and skill games to increase their social skills and calm their nervous of being around people. If therapy does not work for an individual they may be given medication, and in some cases they give medication while attending therapy.
