Client age/grade: Client is a 17-year-old male and he is currently in the 12th grade. Client will be finished with high school in approximately 3 months.

Background information about client: This client is a Caucasian, straight, male, referred by his very close friend who has been seeing a counselor for telecounseling here at the PRACTICE. Also, he was referred by his father due to struggling with the problems that occur within his life and trying to move past some of the traumatic events that have occurred in his life.

Client centered was used for building the relationship and allowing the client to be the expert of the session (e.g. client was more directive of the session). Existential was used for responsibility and meaning making. CBT was used for coping skills and behavior strategies.
Techniques/interventions that are theory appropriate used in this session: The counselor used empathy, congruency, and unconditional positive regard to continue to allow the client to speak his mind and express his feelings in this session. The counselor also used the idea of exploration to understand the client. The counselor was responsible for being aware and questioning the client’s biases while at the same time understanding his meaning making process. The counselor was sensitive to help with the client’s exploration of weaknesses, limitations, and responsibility as well as his strengths, opportunities, and freedoms.
