CBMs are assessments that monitor progress on curricular content, as has been stated previously in this paper. CBMs can be used for reading, mathematics, writing with expression and spelling (Patton, Reschly and Appleton, 2014, p.284). To get a better understanding of how exactly this assessment will be used in a classroom an example of a reading CBM being administered, scored and used to making teaching decisions will be discussed below. This process starts by having the teacher create, reading probes that are at an appropriate level for the student they are assessing. Teachers can create this reading probes from a multitude of resources for free, such as EasyCBM, AIMSweb, DIBELS and DIBELS NEXT (Patton, Reschly, Appleton, 2014, p.285). This line will be what the teacher bases the weekly data on to determine if the student is on track to meeting their goal by the end of the year. When assessing the student, they will read the passage aloud for one minute, while the teacher is marking correct and incorrect words (McLane, 2017, para 4). The teacher will then count all of the words read correctly per minute and plot that data on the graph. After scoring and graphing the date the teacher will decide if the instruction is effective or if change needs to be implemented (McLane, 2017, para 5). If a change is necessary, this is when a teacher can implement an intervention such as individual instruction time or small group instruction. If this intervention is not effective then the teacher can try other interventions until one is found that effectively helps the student meet their end of year goal (McLane, 2017, para 6).
