THC is approved as a medicine by the FDA. Dronabinol, a synthetic THC, and nabilone, a synthetic chemical similar to THC, are available in the form of pills. The medicines are used to reduce pain and inflammation, treatment, nausea of cancer patients after chemotherapy, and also to boost the appetite of AIDS patients. THC has also been used for reducing pain, stiffness and muscle spasms in multiple sclerosis patients. Studies are being done for use of the drug for controlling epileptic seizures. There are studies that show that marijuana use can be used to treat and prevent the eye disease glaucoma. The effects of marijuana may slow the progression of the disease, and prevent blindness. CBD is a cannabinoid which is being researched in preventing spreading of cancer. Several states specifically approve the use of medical marijuana for PTSD. However, controlled studies have not been conducted to determine the effectiveness or safety of medical marijuana for PTSD. Some research suggests that marijuana can be harmful to veterans with PTSD because of the addictive properties.
