World War One was a child with several ideological, political and cultural parents. Nationalism inflated confidence to the point of arrogance and set European rivals against each other. Militarism created a fascination with military power, fuelled a never-ending arms race within Europe and fostered an eagerness of war, rather than a dread of it. Imperialism drew the ‘Great Powers’ into competition for ever territory and resources. Finally, the spiderweb-like alliance system divided Europe into two antagonistic halves and led nations to an inevitable war.
