Causes Of White Working Class Voters

Decent Essays
White working class voters are angry because they don't see the current status of the economy as a success. In a lot of rural areas and small towns the economy is not doing as well as it is in more urban areas and there are no higher wage alternatives for most rural jobs. I think the cause for this anger was a good basis for voting they way they did. Tim Wise’s chapter “White Like Me: Race and Identity Through Majority Eyes” summarizes how race today is conceptualized. He tells a story about how he was actively receiving the perks of being white and collaborating with the system of white supremacy, even if he did not want to. He then speaks about privilege and how it has been the thing that has helped through school, getting a job, at parties and during activism. “Donald Trump and the Fall of Whiteness” starts off talking about how white supremacy is coming to an end. Very little has reformed from the earlier few decades when reexamining the 1992 election race for the presidency. Sulking tempers, outbursts, and verbal abuse may have reached all-time highs between candidates; however, the promises made and ideas imposed by each elective have not budged an inch. Per the National Bureau of Economic Research, ethnic diversity seems to be the major determinant for rioting in L.A., while little evidence points to poverty in the community as a large cause. (Glaeser 1) Media coverage of the riots would provide ample election exposure for the running nominees. It was this very same ethnic diversity that brings about the Black Lives Matter(BLM) activist movement in 2013, in response to the acquittal of George…

The quote, “Britain is a nation divided by class whereas the US continues to be a classless society” is only partially true; both Great Britain (GB) and the United States of America (USA) are divided by social classes. However, at one point in time, roughly about the late 1900’s, the quote was highly debatable. The United States of America and other countries thought that there was little class differentiation in the USA and the social class system consisted mostly of the middle class. Michael Zweig’s “The Working Class Majority: America’s Best Kept Secret,” published in 2000, is a great example of why it was a controversy and how class systems existed in the USA even then.…

People who see others that are different from them will often immediately decide that they are “weird” and put those people lower than themselves. According to Linda Holtzman and Leon Sharpe in their passage, “Theories and Constructs of Race,” Race is just a social construct made by humans to exclude people based on what they look like, where they are from, their culture, etc. If scientists were to look at someone’s deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) compared to another person with, say, different colored skin, they would notice that there is not much of a difference between the two people. Therefore, as Holtzman and Sharpe say, “race is constructed socially, culturally, politically,…
