As the popularity continues to grow, there are also many concerns regarding to the effects of violent video games on our younger generation. In fact, many people blame on violent video games being the solely cause of teenager mass shooting events. However, I firmly believe that violent video games have little to no effect on the past unfortunate events. Violent video games are merely a type of entertainment, same as social networking or movies. Hence, there are other causes such as mental illness or the child’s surroundings, like their friends or family. As mentioned in the case of Adam Lanza of the Sandy Hooks Elementary school shooting, violent video games only took a small part in contributing to his decision to behave so,. People failed to consider his unstable mental state or possible his childhood which drove him into madness. Besides mental illness, family domestic violence is also another factor which causes adolescents to behave aggressively towards people around them. It is understandable that a child tends to show his anger towards his surrounding as a result of being a victim of family domestic violence. Another worrying cause of early childhood aggressive behavior is the exposure to bullying. How many times have we heard of suicidal cases in the younger population due to bully? Many bullied kids tend to bully other weaker youths as a way to defend themselves or simply, in order to relieve their anger. In worse case scenarios, younger kids build up their hate towards their schools, their clueless teachers or their ignorant classmates and as a result, Sandy Hooks Elementary school shooting happened. Therefore, it is clear to see that an adolescent’s surroundings play an important role in the outcome of their behavior as they grow up rather than putting blames on violent video games. Another factor to be considered is that the nature of violent video game does not determine the outcome of adolescents’ behavior. As an experienced video game player, I believe it is not the content of the game but rather the competitiveness and challenging gameplay of it that can also lead to aggressive behavior. For example, a simple game such as car racing or boxing can cause aggression in a player’s behavior if he or

A teenager could grow up never playing a video game in his life and go on to create violence. Another teenager could grow up playing video games 24/7 and live a normal and healthy life. Many studies have tried to figure out why this is so but not enough research addresses weather violent video games cause teens to react violently. Another theory people believe is the social learning theory. The social learning theory hypothesizes that playing aggressive video games leads to the urge of violent behavior and would imitate what these children see on screen while the catharsis theory hypothesizes that playing these aggressive video games has a relaxing effect by taking out the violence through the video game and therefore having a positive effect on the child.…

It is declared by the US Supreme Court that some demonstrated effects from video games that show in the studies are “both small and indistinguishable from effects produced by some other media”. Nonetheless, it is researched that there are no moderate, large, or strong effects from video games toward youth’s aggression at all (Williams, Skoric 228-229). It can be said that video games are not the direct cause of the hostility in youth. These aspects likely clear the suspicion about the violent effects from video games.
