Furthermore, another cause of the three deaths is the American Dream. In the Great Gatsby, the characters strive to achieve their version of the American Dream, wealth. For example, Daisy married Tom instead of Gatsby because she wanted the money “She wanted her life shaped now… of love, of money, of unquestionable practicality… that force took shape in the middle of spring with the arrival of Tom Buchanan” (Fitzgerald 151). Although she loved Gatsby, she married Tom because Gatsby was poor. The ideal set by society drove Daisy to choose power and money over love. Therefore, driving Gatsby to pursue that same ideal believing it would bring her back to him, only to set forth an inevitable, tragic outcome.
