    1. During Washington’s presidency the population was overwhelmingly more rural than later years, nearly 90% of citizens located in small settlements rather than some of the few established cities. Additionally, only 5% of them lived to the west of the Appalachians, which was largely Indian territory; most still lived within the original colonial borders on the eastern seaboard. Washington was drafted for presidency unanimously despite not directly pursuing the office, a feat that has never been accomplished in a presidential election since. Another difference between his and modern presidencies is the number of departments under his authority: today, fifteen department heads serve under President Obama compared to Washington’s meager three.…

This revolt was called the Stono Rebellion and began under the leadership of a man named Jemmy, along with about 20 other slaves. Many of them were seasoned soldiers, meaning they had experience with firearms. Their reason for the rebellion was for their liberty. They gathered at the Stono River and raided a warehouse store, Hutchenson’s, executing the white owners and placing their victims’ heads on the store’s front steps for all to see.…

On March 13, 1811, Santa Anna went with his regiment to Tampico, Mexico, to suppress insurgents working for the separation of Texas. However, his fame and success is mainly attributed to his role in the Mexican War of Independence. At first Santa Anna sided with the Spanish to crush the Mexican rebellion for independence, but when it was clear that he was fighting a lost cause, he switched sides.…

In Southampton, VA, in 183, a violent rebellion led by Nat Turner caused the deaths of many white men, women, and children. While I believe Nat Turner thought he was fighting for the freedom of slaves, it was portrayed the wrong way because he was a religiously misguided fanatic. The rebellion caused more problems for the slaves rather than solve anything. For example, the rebellion made whites feel as though they had an excuse to torture, or execute innocent slaves. The fact that Nat Turner stated in his confessions that God spoke to him telling him to rebel proves my claim that he was religiously misguided.…

Despite the terror spread among the white people, Turner’s Rebellion lasted no more than 36 hours. Be that as it may, most slaves appeared to be panicked by the savage butchery, and fled to warn other whites. In the wake of assaulting about six residences, the revolutionaries noticed that a portion of the whites had evacuated. Turner separated his "army" to achieve maximum ground and set a meet point. This was maybe the downfall of his rebellion; the absence of firm leadership drove a considerable lot of the attacking gatherings, after killing the people in the household , to stay and get tipsy.…

I learned that many slaves would escape to the north and live there for many years but then be captured and sent back to the south to become slaves again. This would also happen to people who had not been slaves their whole life. I also learned that cotton was the most profitable plant in America and that it caused many slave owners to become extremely wealthy allowing the slave market to thrive. The Nat Turner rebellion is new to me and is an interesting point where the roles were reversed for a day with the slaves harming the white slave owners. This revolt also helped to get more slaves to have more hope that one day they could be free.…
