Sea-Level Rise is a consequence of the global climate change causing a general shoreline retreat and an increased flooding (Mangor 2004). With a 1 m rise in Sea Level, affected populations will be 36.9 million in the East Asia and Pacific region, 7.9 million in the Middle East and North Africa, 6.4 million in South Asia, 2.7 million in Latin America and the Caribbean, and 2.3 million in Sub-Saharan Africa (Dasgupta et al. 2008). With tidal gauge instruments, it was measured that the sea level has risen by an average of 1.7 ± 0.3 mm/year since 1950 (Cazenave and Nicholls 2010). Sea Level Rise has also been routinely measured by high-precision altimeter satellites. Satellite altimetry indicated that the sea level is not rising homogeneously.

The three main causes for the Sea Level Rise are thermal expansion of sea water due to ocean warming, water mass input from land ice melt and land water reservoirs, and the change in terrestrial storage (Dasgupta et al. 2008; Cazenave and Nicholls 2010). Although there is evidence of ice sheet growth in the Eastern regions of Antarctica, when coupled with the measured losses of the ice sheet in the West, including Greenland, the evidence favored the direction of increased Sea Level Rise. Since it is geographically situated facing the bay of Bengal, the coastal areas are prone to natural disasters such as cyclones, storm surges, floods tornadoes, etc. About 80% of the country is formed by the floodplains of big rivers known as Meghna, Ganges, and Brahmaputra-Jamuna, making the area vulnerable to sea rise (Ali et al. 1996; Jorgensen and Fath 2014). Bangladesh is a very densely populated country, with a population of 163.4 million currently, and it is also one of the poorest countries of the world (Ali 1996).
