There has been a centuries old conflict between the Muslim Arabs and the Israeli Jews over the rights of ownership to the holy land. Arabs and Jews began to express nationalism for their religious beliefs which was part of the reason for the conflict between the two sides. Because of this the Israeli-Palestinian conflict intensified in the 1940s and has expanded with much violence on both sides in the 2000s. On May 14, 1948 the British withdrew from Palestine and the Jewish National Council proclaimed Israel as a state. With the departure of the British it was decided that Palestine would be divided in half. The Arab nations rejected the partition of Palestine and decided to invade the state of Israel. The former Minister of Foreign Affairs said in 2007 that, “the wave of terrorism which has murdered over 1,100 Israelis since September 2000 has undermined the peace process and led to deadlock(ProCon.org). One disadvantage is that the illegal settlement and the wall effected the Palestinians socially and economically more than the Israelis and it has not deter terrorism. There are been too many causalities involved in this conflict and it has been going on for too long. An alternative would be too give each group a section of the land to own and the section that has been contested should be own by both parties. An advantage of this solution would be that each side has control of their own land and can conduct themselves has they wish without fighting. And the side in which they have share would be easier to come to an agreement for because they already have their own land. However, the disadvantage would be if they can actually agree on what part of the land to own and what part of the land to share. The problem is the land in question is Jerusalem and it is significate to both Jews and Arabs. For Jews Jerusalem is a holy city and it means a lot to a people that have been hunted and killed for their beliefs. For the Arabs Jerusalem is also an important city because it is the location of the Prophet’s night journey.
