The number of migrants coming from Africa to Italy last year was near 64,000 people (Sieff). It has become very easy to get into Italy from Gambia because of the fighting in Libya, this fighting has distracted Italy and they left their borders unguarded. Most people are forced to keep their plans of leaving a secret until they leave in case of someone telling the Gambian government. If the government finds out that people are planning on leaving, they will arrest those people. Some people won’t even tell their family that they are leaving, they will continue their normal routine until one day they just leave and never come back. Most of the people leaving Gambia for Italy know what the risks are. They know that probability says they will die before making to Italy, but they continue to try and make it because they will risk their lives for a better life. It took one guy three years to earn enough money to be able to travel to Italy ($500). There is a huge wealth gap between the poor and the rich, and it all was decided by one factor: If you had a relative in Europe, you were rich; if not, then you were poor. The only people in Gambia that were making enough money were the ones that were close to the president, those that weren’t close to the president made at most $100 a month. There is a sign in Gambia that hurts people to look at it, it reads: “Grow what you eat and eat what you grow.” That sign is such a problem for people because they can’t grow any crops; therefore they aren’t eating and people are starving. In a small town in Gambia, Dampha Kunda, there is one tractor belonging to someone that has relatives in Italy. Someone working driving the tractor would typically earn five dollars a day, which isn’t a lot, but it’s all they can
