Causes Of Slope Failure

Decent Essays
Slope failure occurs is when abrupt movement of slope material due to loss of shear strength where pore pressure and shear stresses increase. There are many factors that cause shear stress increase while chances of slope failure also increase. Different factors have respective processes lead to decrease shear strength of rock mass such as increase pore pressure, weathering, increase friction angle, cracking and above that. Shear stresses increase in rock mass due to surcharge of force from top of the slope, soil weight increase due to higher groundwater content at the top of the slope, undercutting and excavation at bottom of

Sustainment operations in our unit, 4/160 SOAR(A), more than likely differs greatly from any other regular army unit. The logistical support required to keep two MH-47g heavy assault companies and one MH-60m company all operational and flying, while strewn all over the world, is incredibly complex. We have many variables working both with and against us. We are described as having a no fail mission. Obviously failure is not an option, and it’s when this mindset prevails down to the lowest echelon that enables our success.…

John McPhee’s The Control Of Nature tells three stories about how the Earth’s surface is changing. The stories have different settings, different plots, and different conclusions, but share two common themes that relate to our “enduring understandings” of Earth Science. The first theme is that the energy for the changes comes either from outer space (more specifically, the Sun), or from deep underneath the Earth’s surface. The other theme is that water and rock are never really created or destroyed, but instead cycle through the Earth’s systems in changing form. The stories combine these themes in different ways.…

Monterey County has many aquifers to provide fresh, clean water, 80% of this is groundwater (Public Services, 2010). More groundwater pumping leads to localized over-drafting which in turn causes saltwater intrusion into any of its six water basins: Parajo Valley, Prunedale, Salinas Valley, Marina Fort Ord, Carmel, or El Toro (Public Services, 2010). Arguably the most important basin is the Salinas Valley because it is home to the Salinas River which not only supplies water for the surrounding agricultural fields, but also can also easily overflow and kill the crops if not properly maintained (Ceballos, 2015). Places like the salt marshes of Elkhorn Slough are susceptible to land and mudslides due to the lack of plants and their roots on…

    Mudboils In Tully Valley

    • 1049 Words
    • 5 Pages

Discussion: Mudboils cause structural failures since they are suspensions of gravel, clay, silt and fine sand creating an unstable surface. Since the beginning of persistent mudboil activity in the 1970’s, natural landscapes and engineered features have become subject to land-subsidence as mudoils continually deteriorate the areas in their path (Tresohlavy 2003, pp. 27). Petroleum pipeline rerouting, telephone cable burials, and the collapse of bridges have demonstrated the true capabilities of mudboil persistence and destruction (Kappel & McPherson, 1998). These impacts have created a motive for truly solving the problems of mudboils within the Tully Valley. Portions of underground pipeline have become exposed due to the land subsidence issues…

The San Andreas Fault is perhaps the most dangerous and destructive fault lines in North America. Passing through one of the most populous areas of the United States, the San Andreas Fault line stretches nearly the entire western seaboard of California (Lynch). The infamous earthquake of San Francisco of 1906 is likely the reason the fault has been so ill-reputed. Furthermore, the fault has been relatively inactive and the chance for a large rupture which could span hundreds of kilometers along the fault to be extremely deadly grow increasingly higher as the time passes.…
