Both northerners and southerners were hopeful for expansion into the new territory acquired from the war. However this began the debate over of, would the new territories be free or slave states. After the election of 1848, the nation was at a stand stile on the issue. Their views on the subject came from the beliefs on which they were raise. The southerners were raised as farmers and taught that slave labor was a great tool to be used. Whereas the northerners were raise on the ideas of commercial and industrial developments and the expansion of free labor. They were two different beliefs that butted heads in every aspect.
