Depression is an illness that involves the body, mood, and thoughts; it is generally a prolonged feeling of sadness and hopelessness, lasting anywhere from weeks to years. A large part of the teenage and middle-age population suffers from some type of depression. There is no single cause for depression, but the majority of the causes are similar. Genetics, as in if there is a history of depression in your family you are more likely to develop depression. Health conditions, such as cancer or other life threatening illnesses can cause you to become depressed. A person who suffers from Bipolar Depression does not stay depressed, he or she swings in and out of depression, feeling happy for a while, then angry or irritable, and then depressed again. It is a sort of cycle the person goes through over and over again. There is more than one type of Bipolar Disorder, so even once a physician has diagnosed a person with Bipolar Disorder; the physician has to figure out specifically what type that person has.
