Sectional Differences As a country, America has gone through many changes over the years. Before the Civil War, America was divided into two sections, the North and South. Although the two colonies were located in the same country, they had different ways of living life. In the 1800s, sectional conflicts rose in the United States between the North and the South. The major sectional differences were in state rights, slavery, and the way the colonies functioned. These large amount of distinctions between the North and South caused the Civil War. One of the major differences between the North and South were the ideas regarding state rights. The North’s economy included a great deal of manufacturing while the South was mostly agriculture and enslaved workers. In the South, however slavery played a vital role in the economy. In "The History and Present State of Virginia", Robert Beverly said, “They are called slaves, in respect of the time of their servitude, because it is for life.” States in the South like Virginia believed that they could break under economic pressure if slavery was abolished. The South believed that slavery was acceptable and slaves were seen as property and not considered as people. In Document 11, "Two African Slaves Recall Their Enslavement", one of the slaves stated, "... I had a very unhappy and discontented journey, being in continual fear that the people I was with would murder me". Most of these slave went hours without eating and lived everyday hoping it wasn't their last day alive. The North then believed that people should not be kept as slaves so, they freed their slaves. The Southern states , however, did not free their slaves and it was still legal to own and work
