Procrastination Among College Students

I’ve have been putting off writing this introduction for awhile now and tonight I had great intentions of sitting down to finally write it. Instead, I have found myself sucked into Ace of Cakes because I had no idea where to start. Procrastination is like a contagious disease that many students fall victim to. When school work starts to pile up and school becomes increasingly more stressful students tend to resort to other activities to avoid their responsibilities. Many students struggle with meeting the expectations of their classes and tend to fall into the rotation of putting off assignment until last minute. A few common types of procrastination seen among college students are social media, competing obligations, over-lenient deadlines, …show more content…
The only thing more stressful than exams is when a student has multiple assignments do at the same time for all of their classes. When classes become demanding students can have a difficult time keeping up and some might even succumb to the pressure. When the stress becomes too much for the student to handle, they will seek out ways to avoid their schoolwork, such as going out with friends or picking up an extra shift at their job. College students often think they can add a part-time job into the mix of trying to balance school and a social life. More often than not, students have a hard time balancing it all. When it becomes too much to handle, work usually becomes the student’s first priority. Money usually begins to outweigh their schoolwork because they can benefit from the money. They see school as a large expense that is taking all their money, and that is how students rationalize cutting back on classes or dropping out. In other situations work is seen as a distraction because students use the time as another way to socialize instead of focusing on school. Lastly, sports are another diversion from schoolwork because instead putting more time into studying they are putting more time in at practice every night. If an athlete knows people are relying on them to win an upcoming game, all their focus is going to be on practice, not their assignments. How they perform in …show more content…
After enough times of receiving mediocre grades from avoiding assignments until last minute, students will eventually gain a sense of time management and learn ways to stay on track. All it takes for a student to be successful at breaking the cycle is a little determination and focus. By completing their assignments early students will be able to enjoy guilt free activities because they don’t have the stress of a paper being due as they usually would. If they kick this habit early on and learn better time management skills, students will lead a more successful academic

University promotes many other experiences for students; such as societies, sport teams and social events, which can collectively hinder the amount of time spent on studying. According to Adair (1998), having an effective balance of good quality study time and a vigorous personal life can help to measure how successful an individual’s time management is. The lack of efficient time management can result in an individual; becoming more forgetful with assignments, loosing priority, and consequently leading to a student focusing more time on one assignment over another more important assignment (Anderson and Bolt, 2013). Procrastinating is a deterrent to effective time management and it can be overcome through imagining the finished task/assignment; the feeling which is received after visualising work completed can actually act as a motivator to begin (ibid). The skills of managing time can be more effective by breaking it down into a specific step by step plan; using timetables, thinking and planning ahead, scheduling time around family and friend commitments, creating balance between academic and paid work, discovering a study method which best suits individual requirements and whilst studying take frequent breaks (National Union of Students,…

In Dave Galehouse’s article “Why College Athletes Do Not Succeed”, he states that “Student-athletes don’t realize the time and effort commitment that they are getting involved in and the sacrifices they are going to make. After classes and practices, student athletes are left with very little free time to do school work and be social with their friends” (Galehouse). It might appear to make someone more well-rounded, but it is not always apparent the amount of stress and fatigue that come with it. Jackson Van Arsdale gives a first person perspective of the difficulties associated with being a college athlete in his article “The Life of a Student Athlete”, he stated “ You are not only behind the rest of the class, but you are on the road. You have to teach yourself the missed material from the back of a bumpy bus, an airplane, or in the computer room of the hotel” (Van Arsdale). This quote shows how hard it can be being a student athlete. They don’t become a more well-rounded person, as their education suffers due to the missed class time and assignments. Athletics may serve as a stress reliever or a way to release from academics, but they will only make students’ education…

Students have lives outside of their school day. Most of their lives are being overwhelmed by homework. Some things such as sports, friends, and other interesting activities are things that students look forward to, not more work. But when there is too much homework, they are prevented from doing their extra-curricular activities. Life for most students is now revolving…

As mention before one of the contributors of causing stress is becoming involved in extracurricular activities while being a full time student, even though extracurricular activities plays a positive and important role in a student life it can also contribute many stressors. Though, American and universal understudies may experience common stressors in school, impression of what are considered as scholastic stressors and their responses to these stressors may contrast (Misra, R., & Castillo, L. G., 2014). Some students might find it difficult to find a balance between their course loads along with the extracurricular activities. As a student myself I have experienced that wanting to participate in certain activities that conflict my school schedule often forced me to focus on picking between the two. Of course causing me to push the school work aside to participate in the activities causing delay on my assignment, this delay not only harms a student’s grade but as well as causes a student unwanted stress which is harmful to one’s…

Ways for example, not keeping them focus on school rather on sports, or even failing to prepare them for tests the next day. On one hand, I agree with Kolbert that sports have can distract students with their education. But on the other hand, I still insist that that really is not the case of why students are not doing that great in school. Research was shown that about ⅔ of high-schools students say that they are bored in their classroom every day at school. (Indiana University's High School Survey of Student Engagement (HSSSE) ). And well, if you are bored in class, then you definitely are not paying attention to the lesson. And not paying attention to the lesson, then you probably will fail the test on the…

This experience that has made an influence on my education immensely was desisting from procrastinating. The significance behind refraining from procrastinating was how liberating it felt when finishing my school work in advance and not worrying about the consequences that procrastinating brings. I realized by procrastinating in my school work, I would remain unhappy and anxious, making it not worth it. Also, procrastinating instills the feeling of carrying the weight of the world on my shoulders, and it often held me back from committing to activities that I normally enjoyed. Hence, I came to the conclusion that I would refrain from procrastinating as it takes away my happiness. One way I utilized to overcome this problem was blocking websites or apps that distracted me while trying to complete my assignments. There are various websites that block specific pages and apps that were created specifically for people who procrastinate on a frequent basis. Also, I would simply write down all primary goals and assign a deadline or reward myself for the adequate progress of studying and finishing homework. Lastly, studying at a library or work environment was a major incentive to successfully completing all my schoolwork due to the limited amount of distractions around me. Comparable to one of the girls in The College Fear Factor, Elisa,…

During my first years as a high school student, I usually procrastinate on my assignments because I couldn’t balance the workload between my most challenging classes, which was my Honors English class and my AP European class. As a result, I end up having to choose between them as to what assignment I have enough time to do. That school year was one of the hardest for me. I was able to stay on track and handle my workload by writing down everything I had to do. To-do lists were very helpful for me and I found my tasks to be more manageable than I thought. The next year, I struggled in my Honors Precalculus class. It was very difficult for me to adjust to my teacher’s ways and I felt very overwhelmed at that time. He gave plenty of assignments…

In the article, I’ll Do It Tomorrow, Zarick and Stonebraker explain many fascinating facts about procrastination. One of the most interesting facts that I learned was that seventy-three percent of college students are unlikely procrastinate in a course they like rather than a course they dislike. Fifty-six percent are unlikely to do so in a course for their major. I learned that procrastination is due to “a fear or failure” (Zarick & Stonebraker p. 212), also, students will wait to start on an assignment due at the end of the week rather than starting when the assignment is assigned. One suggested solution was to divide a project in “smaller task” (p. 214) to feel less…

Student athletes are faced with balancing sleep with school just like any other student but with other factors that can cause more troubles. They are also faced with dealing with playing a college sport and the strain it places on your body. The aches and pain that comes from practicing every day for months straight. The emotional roller coaster that results have can have lasting effects. Say the individual loses a big game and the next day they have an exam they are not going to be doing as well on the exam since they lost and are concerned about last night’s performance not the exam in front of them. Regular students are faced with distractions and stress as well but they are self-inflicted. The student may be worried about some party that they went to that weekend and what they did and who they talked to. The student could not have not attended the party and they would be focused for the exam until the student athlete who be riding the emotional roller coaster…

Pondiscos study shows that two-thirds of American high school graduates take no AP courses, fewer than 8 percent of high school students took more than five AP classes. Moreover, Pondiscio concludes that “about 40% spend no time at all in organized activities”. Pondiscio data matches my experience, if students are not taking any AP courses or extra curricular activities that are time consuming, than how are students stress? The problem is not coursework, but time management. If students avoided procrastinating on their assignments then the would have more time to research, analyze, and improve the quality of work. More students would to be able to take and pass their AP courses and more importantly; the workload wouldn’t be overwhelming because they would have adequate time to complete their…

Managing time is extremely important to everyone. A lot of people don’t know how to manage time effectively. I used to be like that. This lesson would have been more important last year for me but it is still extremely important, since I would procrastinate until the last possible second. Since I would do that I would have to work hard to get decent grades. I found myself doing stuff I didn’t have to do. I would just procrastinate. Last year’s procrastion was probably due to the fact that I was so done with high school. The start of this year I decided that I should change my ways. So I started this year off strong and I didn’t procrastinate. As this year went by I slowly was procrastinating a bit but it wasn’t terrible, but I did need that to change. Luckily our seminar was about Managing Your TIme. I learned that I should prioritize more efficiently. I started to dedicate more time to academics and less time to netflix and hanging out. I learned that you in fact have time for everything you just need to learn how to fit everything into your day. I used to think that I couldn’t possibly do everything in one day. Now I know that it is possible. I try to manage my time effectively…

There are many viable solutions for this annoying problem that we all face. First thing we can do is make a schedule. Knowing when your assignments are due, really lets you see how much time it will take to complete it and if you can do it in one sitting. And if it 's not possible to complete in one day, then break it up into individual sessions. If you have a really long paper that is due next week, due a little bit each day and that way it won 't seem as long or stressful. Finally, It is shown that students who reward themselves( taking a break, going out with friends, buying something for yourself, etc) for finishing their assignments, procrastinate less since they have an incentive to do their…
