There are numerous problems that arise within the correction system. Although, one problem stands out the best would be prison overcrowding. Numerous people are committing crimes and being incarcerated. Thus, leading to congestion and problems within the prison facility. This paper will discuss the purpose for prison overpopulation and what can be done to prevent and fix the problem. Overcapacity in prisons has been an ongoing mêlée for the longest time. But with every problem must come a solution. However, overcrowding in prison has been a long term battle. Things that were tried in the past still are not working now and overpopulation is at an all-time high. According to Frantz a mandatory minimums is defined as “a court decision setting where judicial discretion is limited by law.” (Frantz, Federal Prison Overcrowding—Costs, Reasons, and Alternatives) By requiring offenders to serve the minimum sentencing is leading to overcrowding. Instead of making an offender serve their minimum sentencing the court should imply a work program. The work program would allow non-serious offenders the right to work within the prison during their sentence. For everyday they work they lose a certain amount of time off their sentencing. Let’s say someone is locked up for drug possession. They are sentenced to 6 months in jail. However, they participate in this work program inside the kitchen at the jail and get their time reduced from 6 months to 3.5 or 3. Now that opens more rooms for more serious offenders. One change I would implement would be dealing with the lifestyle in prison. Prisoners get three meals a day, a cot to sleep on, showers and some even get recreation time. To a few individuals that is great, especially if they are homeless or poor. Eliminate the recreation time instead make them attend workshops on the crime they committed. I do know some prisons have work programs but honestly they all should. Instead of the offender getting a cot; give them a blanket and pillow and they can sleep on the floor in their cell. That is the problem to some individuals jail/prison is luxurious to them because they have nothing. The corrections system needs to make jail/prison not so luxurious so people will not want to come
